Transcription & Translation  Volunteering

Teaching mudra: A mudra is a symbolic gesture

Why do we do this?

This is an excellent opportunity to support our practice and that of others. Working more closely with the talks will help us gain a deeper understanding of ourselves. Moreover, by providing an alternative way of accessing these Dhamma teachings, we can help others as well.

How do I start?

If you're interested in transcribing or translating talks given by Kalyanamitta Upul Nishantha, please refer to the Transcription and translation volunteering list, select a talk you wish to work on, and contact us at nilambedhamma@yahoo.com to express your interest.

What's holding you back?

1. "My English is not good!"

If you feel this way, don't worry. You're not alone. Just do your best and ask for help when you need it. Our volunteers are happy to assist you. And take this as an opportunity to grow.

Once, when Claudia was at Nilambe and apologized for a mistake, Teacher Upul told her, "This centre is not teaching you how to be perfect!" As learners, it's natural to make mistakes. Through investigating, being mindful, and understanding, we gradually progress. We learn how to grow, not how to be perfect.

2. "I don't have time!"

Take your time. There's no rush. It's a mindful practice. If you work on a few sentences slowly but steadily, you'll eventually complete the task. Remember: each drop fills a jar.

Tips for transcription

If you're interested in transcribing a talk, here are some tips on how to do it:

Regardless of the method you choose, please aim to transcribe verbatim, typing the exact words that Teacher Upul used. This helps preserve the authenticity of the teaching. If you feel tempted to change the wording because it "sounds better," simply notice the desire and let it go.

Tips for translation

When it comes to translation, you have a couple of options:

Regardless of the method you choose, take your time and do your best to preserve the original meaning while making it accessible to readers.
